What Are The Best Nails To Use With Vinyl Siding?

2 min read

The nails you use can make or break a project. So if you’re looking for the best nails to use with vinyl siding, I recommend using Galvanized Roofing Nails. Why galvanized? Galvanized nails are covered with a zinc coating. This helps it avoid rust and corrosion that can happen when exposed to the outside elements, like moisture.

If you’re at Home Depot or another home improvement store, here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right nails for vinyl siding:

  • Type: Galvanized Roofing Nails.
  • Length: Between 1 1/4″ – 2″ ensuring at least 3/4″ of the nail penetrates into the home’s wood sheathing.

Other Details to Keep in Mind When Using Nails on Vinyl Siding

  • The wide head (5/8″) of roofing nails is ideal to ensure the secure hold of the vinyl siding
  • Nails should have a little room (less than 1/16″) to let the vinyl move and not driven all the way down on the wood sheathing pinching the vinyl siding
  • Every nail should be placed in the middle of the slot on the vinyl siding. This will ensure the siding can move side to side, which will help avoid future buckling when the siding expands and contracts
  • Generally, nails should be placed at least every 16″

The Wrap Up

Picking the right nail and fastener is a critical part of most DIY projects around the house. If you have ever driven by a house where sections of vinyl siding are starting to pop off the installers most likely didn’t follow the above advice on nails.
