ceiling vent drywall crumbled nail out best way to repair

The vent for our H&A is is the ceiling in the bathroom. The screw is about 1/2 in on the face plate. after 30 years, I guess the drywall around it just cracked or crumbled and the screw fell out. Now there's nothing to screw it to any easier suggestions to repair than cutting a new drywall vent? I know I must not be seeing the obvious. Seems like poor design, but I know it's common poor design.

Please look and give me advice to do this right. I have a few ideas, but they don't seem very " problem repaired"
